  • What is a KML file? What is a KMZ file?

Boaters, outdoor enthusiasts, geocachers, pilots, field scientists, geography professionals and many others use KML and KMZ files to share and view map data. KML/KMZ files can contain data about shapes (points, lines, and polygons) but they can also contain images (rasters) for display on maps. If you need to transfer geographic data between different software applications, like transferring waypoints from a GPS to Google Earth, your data may be in to KML or KMZ format. We have tools to help you convert KML to KMZ, convert KMZ to KML, and and other formats.

  • What is the difference between KML and KMZ?

As types of files, KML and KMZ so closely related that they are often used interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. KML is a file format used to display geographic data in an Earth browser such as Google Earth. KMZ is a zipped version of KML that contains all the KML files needed for a project. KMZ files are often used to share entire projects, including all the images and other files needed to display the data.

  • Should I use KML or KMZ?

It depends on your needs. KML files are easier to share and edit, but KMZ files are more compact and can include all the files needed for a project. If you need to share a project with someone else, KMZ is usually the best choice.

  • Do your tools convert waypoints, tracks, and areas (points, lines, and polygons) in KML/KMZ files?

Yes, our tools can convert waypoints, tracks, and areas in KML/KMZ files to other formats, such as GeoJSON and shapefile. You can also convert waypoints, tracks, and areas in other formats to KML/KMZ.

  • Do your tools convert or extract images, icons, and styling information from KML/KMZ?

Not yet, but we are working on it! Let us know if you want to get an email when we roll out this feature.

  • How do you open a KML file? How do you open a KMZ file?

Soon, NeatoGeo will open and display your KML and KMZ files. Until then, KML and KMZ files can be opened in Google Earth, Google Maps, QGIS, ArcGIS, Global Mapper, and other mapping applications. To open a KML file in Google Earth, go to File > Open and select the KML file you want to open. To open a KMZ file in Google Earth, go to File > Open and select the KMZ file you want to open. You can also open KML and KMZ files in Google Maps by uploading them to My Maps.

  • Where can I get even more detailed information about KML/KMZ files?
